NK Zagreb City is a football club founded in 2012, built on ambition, identity, and a strong connection to the city it's named after. I designed and built the club's official website and I run its Instagram, so the two work as one system rather than two separate efforts.
The brief
A football club's website has to do two jobs that pull in different directions: it's a home for club content, news, squad, matches, the story of the club, and it's also a storefront, since NK Zagreb City sells its own merchandise. The club needed both handled properly, in Croatian, on a platform the club itself could maintain without needing a developer for every update.
What I built
I built the site on WordPress with WooCommerce for the shop, using PHP where the theme needed custom logic beyond what plugins offer out of the box. WordPress was the right call here for reasons that have nothing to do with novelty: the club needs to publish news and updates on its own, regularly, without me in the loop, and WordPress's editing experience is something non-technical staff can actually use. WooCommerce gives the webshop a proven checkout and inventory flow rather than reinventing commerce logic from scratch, which matters for a club that wants to sell jerseys and merchandise reliably, not experimentally.
The content side and the shop needed to feel like one site, not a CMS bolted onto a separate store, so I spent real effort on the theme work that ties them together: consistent navigation, a visual identity that reflects the club's colors and character, and page templates for match content and club news that make it easy to keep the site current.
Because I also manage @nkzagrebcity on Instagram, I designed the site with that relationship in mind. The site and the social feed aren't competing for the same job. Instagram carries the day-to-day, matchday moments, and community energy, while the website is the durable home for the club's identity and the place people go to buy from the shop. Running both let me keep the visual language and tone consistent across them instead of the usual disconnect between a club's social presence and its website.
The result
NK Zagreb City now has a site at zagrebcity.hr that functions as both its public face and its shop, maintained day to day by the club itself. Combined with the Instagram presence, it gives a club built on ambition and identity a digital presence that actually matches that ambition, coherent, current, and genuinely useful to the fans and community around it.
